Midseason alfalfa field

HarvXtra® Technology

Achieve Higher-Quality Hay and Forage at Every Cut

Elite genetics power Pioneer® brand alfalfa varieties with HarvXtra® technology. Strong agronomic traits and lower plant lignin levels help drive yield performance and high forage quality. Our industry-leading agronomic and nutritional support services back every product.

Higher-Quality Cuttings

Higher-Quality Cuttings

Whatever the harvest timing, relative forage quality is 10 to 15 percent higher than varieties without HarvXtra® technology that are cut at the same time.

Greater Harvest Flexibility

Greater Harvest Flexibility

Don’t sweat weather or harvest delays. Pioneer alfalfa varieties with HarvXtra® technology can be cut up to 7 to 10 days later than standard alfalfa varieties without sacrificing forage quality. Longer harvest intervals may result in more alfalfa tonnage, one less cutting per season and longer stand life.

Better Weed Control and Higher Yields

Better Weed Control and Higher Yields

Early season glyphosate weed control can improve first-year alfalfa yields and forage quality. Pioneer® brand alfalfa varieties with HarvXtra® technology include Roundup Ready® technology for advanced weed control. Better weed control protects the performance potential built into our alfalfa, helping with tough winters, disease resistance and a long stand life. You’ll see consistent top yield performance and forage quality that lasts.

“In the cuttings from our HarvXtra fields, we saw nothing less than 150 RFQ and as high as 220 RFQ.”

Proven in the Field

Harvest can be delayed by seven to 10 days for increased tonnage without sacrificing quality.

HarvXtra® Yield Quality Tradeoff
Harvest can be delayed by seven to 10 days for increased tonnage without sacrificing quality. Fewer total cuttings may increase stand life.

Alfalfa varieties with HarvXtra technology had higher NDFD and higher relative forage quality than standard unimproved alfalfa varieties.

HarvXtra® Forage Quality Differences
Alfalfa varieties with HarvXtra® technology had higher NDFD (30-hr) & higher relative forage quality (RFQ) than standard, unimproved alfalfa varieties.

Alfalfa varieties with HarvXtra technology average 10 to 15 percent higher neutral detergent fiber digestibility across cuttings than conventional varieties.

HarvXtra® Forage Digestibility Changes
Alfalfa varieties with HarvXtra® technology average 10 -15% higher neutral detergent fiber digestibility across cuttings than conventional varieties.1

Unmatched Research Delivering Results

Unmatched Research Delivering Results

University studies confirm alfalfa varieties with HarvXtra® technology have less lignin, higher fiber digestibility and similar yields to conventional alfalfa. Backed by Corteva Agriscience™, Pioneer will continue to be a leader in providing high-quality forage solutions that deliver high yield and reduce risk.

1The Consortium for Alfalfa Improvement was started in 2001, with the following current members: U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center, The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Pioneer Hi-Bred International, and Forage Genetics International.

*Data summarized from World Forage Analysis Superbowl Contest held at the 2017 World Dairy Expo. Entries for the Dairy Hay (A1), Haylage (A2), Commercial Hay (B1), and Baleage (B2) categories where the alfalfa variety was properly identified are included in the dataset. The assignment of forage quality type into Standard Varieties, Improved Quality, and HarvXtra® Technology was based on variety names (contains letters like “Q”, “HQ”, “Hi-Gest”, etc.) and company information about the forage quality potential of each variety. Forage quality comparison data includes Neutral Detergent Fiber Digestibility (NDFD, 30-hr) and Relative Feed Quality (RFQ). Contest partners include Dairyland Laboratories, Inc., Dairy Business Communications, Hay and Forage Grower, University of Wisconsin, U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center, and World Dairy Expo.
